Vision
Reestablish the book as a pillar of American culture and democracy.
Mission
We aim to foster thoughtful, well-crafted book criticism that supports a crucial open dialogue among reviewers, authors, educators, librarians, and above all readers in American society, raising issues critical to maintaining a healthy democracy.

BIG HEADING
As books have been increasingly marginalized, the quality of American thought has suffered. This long-term trend has been accelerated by the rise of technology, especially social media.
This is a large and multi-faceted problem, but one in which book reviews play a critical part. Book reviews inspire book-centered conversation, which in turn stimulates both reading and community engagement. Along with local newspapers, however, book reviews have withered significantly over the last few decades.
Viva La Book Review proposes to support book reviews in print, digital, and audio media, whose arts sections already include book reviews as well as media that do not currently include such reviews. We also propose to foster a new generation of diverse, thoughtful reviewers through online training.
Our belief is that growing the number and quality of critiques will not only stimulate readership and deepen book-centered conversation, but strengthen libraries, community centers, schools, local independent bookstores, and the growing phenomena of book clubs, eventually returning the book to its historically critical place in American culture.
